Customs for UK-to-Latvia Moves

Every UK-to-Latvia removal is now cleared by VID (Valsts ieņēmumu dienests), and duty-free import depends on qualifying for Latvian Transfer of Residence relief. The route passes through Poland and Lithuania, meaning the vehicle must carry valid transit documentation across multiple EU borders.

Every household shipment from outside the EU has to be declared to VID, the Latvian customs authority.

If you are making Latvia your main home, Transfer of Residence relief removes Latvian import VAT (21% of declared value), provided you qualify and the paperwork is complete before your goods reach the Latvian border.

For Latvia the standard EU tests apply: 12 months living outside the EU before the move date, goods owned and used at your UK home for six months or more, import within 12 months of becoming Latvian resident, and keeping the goods for at least 12 months after import.

Latvia uses the euro and has done so since 2014. Staying in Latvia for more than 90 days in any 180 requires a residence permit for British nationals. Since Brexit, British nationals must register with the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP, Pilsonības un migrācijas lietu pārvalde) to establish legal residence.
