Got questions?
We've got answers...

  • How much notice do I need to give to reserve my Removals UK to Estonia service?

Usually it’s best to book at least a week in advance. We still welcome short notice jobs, please check with our team regarding availability. You can call us, drop us a line or chat via Whatsapp.

  • I've never used a Removals UK to Estonia company before, can I book an assessment?

Yes you can. We would love to visit you for a free no obligation quote. You can also send us a walkthough video of your property so we can assess further.

  • I need a moving company in Estonia to move me outside London, what’s your coverage?

We cover the whole of the UK and also most European countries.

  • Do I need customs clearance for removals to Estonia since Brexit?

Yes. Brexit means every move from the UK to Estonia now goes through formal clearance with the Maksu- ja Tolliamet, regardless of size or value. Our team completes the customs paperwork for you on every Estonia booking.

  • What is the Estonian Transfer of Residence process?

Qualifying British nationals can bring household goods into Estonia without paying Estonian import VAT (22% of declared value) under Transfer of Residence relief. You need to be moving your main home to Estonia, have lived outside the EU for 12 months or more, and have owned the goods for at least six months. We prepare the paperwork and check the whole package before your goods leave the UK.

  • How long does a removal to Estonia take?

The UK-to-Tallinn road route covers approximately 1,900 miles and passes through the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Latvia. Full load removals to Tallinn typically take 4–6 days door to door. Part load and groupage services typically take 7–14 days. These times include customs clearance. Delays at the Polish-Baltic crossing are uncommon but are almost always caused by incomplete documentation.

  • Can I move to Estonia without paying 22% import VAT on my belongings?

Yes, as long as you qualify for Transfer of Residence relief. Import the goods within 12 months of becoming Estonian resident and do not sell or transfer them for 12 months after import. We prepare and check the documents for you.

  • What is Estonia's e-residency and does it help with my removal?

Estonia's e-residency programme provides a digital identity for non-residents to access Estonian business services online. E-residency alone does not constitute physical residence and does not qualify you for Transfer of Residence customs relief. Physical relocation of your primary residence to Estonia is required. RMV's move managers can clarify what residency documentation is required for customs clearance purposes.

  • Do I need a visa or residence permit to live in Estonia?

Without a visa, UK citizens can stay in Estonia for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A longer stay or permanent move needs a residence permit from the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board. RMV does not arrange permits, but we time your shipment to fit your confirmed residency documents.

  • How far in advance should I book a removal to Estonia?

For full-load removals of three bedrooms or larger, five to seven weeks is recommended given the longer route distance and the need for thorough customs documentation preparation. For part load bookings, three to four weeks is usually sufficient. For urgent requirements, call 0208 0900 232 directly.

UK to Estonia Removal Cost

Estonia has built a reputation as one of Europe's most forward-thinking countries. Tallinn, its medieval-meets-digital capital, is home to a thriving technology sector that has produced more unicorn startups per capita than almost any country in the world. For British professionals working in technology, finance and entrepreneurship, Estonia's e-residency programme and its English-speaking business environment make it a genuinely compelling destination. Beyond the capital, Tartu's university city draws academics and researchers, while the coastal town of Pärnu attracts those seeking a quieter pace alongside the Baltic Sea.

For customs purposes the UK has been a third country to Estonia since 1 January 2021, so every household move must be cleared by the Maksu- ja Tolliamet (Estonian Tax and Customs Board). Qualifying for Transfer of Residence relief, which allows your belongings to be imported without paying Estonian import VAT at 22%, requires specific documentation prepared correctly before the vehicle reaches the Estonian border.

We take care of Estonian customs for you: the Transfer of Residence declaration, your valued inventory and the agent authorisation. Company details and our AIM accreditation are on the About Us page.

How Estonian Customs Works Now

Since Brexit, every UK-to-Estonia removal goes through customs with the Maksu- ja Tolliamet, and duty-free import depends on qualifying for Estonian Transfer of Residence relief.

Estonia's customs authority requires formal declaration of all household goods entering from outside the EU. For British nationals relocating their primary residence to Estonia, the Transfer of Residence scheme provides exemption from Estonian import VAT (22% of the declared value of goods), but only where all eligibility conditions are satisfied and all required documents are submitted correctly before the shipment reaches the Estonian border.

Estonia applies four conditions. You must have lived outside the EU for 12 months or more before moving, owned and used the goods in the UK for six months or more, brought them in within a year of becoming Estonian resident, and keep them for at least a year after import.

Estonia uses the euro, which simplifies financial transfers for British movers compared to some other EU destinations. To stay longer than 90 days in any 180, British nationals need a residence permit. We do not arrange permits, but your move manager schedules the shipment around your confirmed Estonian residency documents, as customs will require proof of Estonian residence as part of the clearance process.

Your Estonian Customs Paperwork

Estonian customs will want to see the following. RMV provides the forms and reviews the full set before your goods leave.

  • Copy of your passport for Estonian customs (Maksu- ja Tolliamet), confirming identity and nationality
  • Estonian proof of residence: rental contract, property deed or Estonian Population Register (Rahvastikuregister) confirmation
  • Full inventory of your goods with second-hand values by category, signed and dated
  • Completed Transfer of Residence declaration for Estonian customs, covering import duty and VAT exemption
  • Personal declaration: goods owned and used in the UK for more than six months, and not to be sold or transferred within a year of import
  • Customs agent authorisation, signed by you, so RMV can represent you with Estonian customs
  • Documents showing a full year of UK residence before the move: council tax bills, bank statements or a UK Certificate of Residence
  • The CMR road consignment note, completed by the driver when your goods are collected

Document errors are the primary cause of border delays on the UK–Estonia route. The transit involves crossing through multiple EU member states, meaning any paperwork issue can compound. RMV reviews every document package before the vehicle departs the UK. All packing materials for an Estonia move are available through our Packing Shop.

Who We Move to Estonia

Technology Professionals and Entrepreneurs Moving to Tallinn

Tallinn's Ülemiste City technology park, the Technopolis cluster and the broader Tallinn startup ecosystem attract British professionals working in software, fintech, cybersecurity and digital media. Estonia's e-residency programme, while not a substitute for physical residence, has created a well-established community of British entrepreneurs who subsequently make the move to Tallinn to be closer to their business operations. Professional relocations to Tallinn are typically one to two-bedroom apartment contents, often with a home office setup that includes multiple screens and workstation equipment. Our man and van service handles smaller professional moves, and our removals service manages full household relocations with customs coordination.

Academics and Students Moving to Tartu

The University of Tartu is one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe and has a significant international student and academic community. British researchers, lecturers and postgraduate students moving to Tartu typically have small move volumes, making part load or groupage the natural choice. Tartu is Estonia's second city and has a distinctly different character from Tallinn: quieter, more affordable, and strongly oriented around university life.

Families and Lifestyle Movers to the Estonian Coast and Islands

A smaller but steady flow of British families and retirees are drawn to Estonia's Baltic coastline, its islands (Saaremaa and Hiiumaa in particular), and the spa resort town of Pärnu. These moves often involve full household contents, including furniture, white goods and personal effects accumulated over many years. Pre-departure storage through our storage service is frequently used where the UK property is vacated before the Estonian property is ready.

Businesses Establishing Estonian Operations

Estonia's digital-first government infrastructure and its membership of both the EU and NATO make it an increasingly attractive base for UK businesses establishing a European presence post-Brexit. Commercial relocations to Tallinn require EORI-registered customs handling and commercial invoice documentation. Our removals service covers commercial relocations for businesses of all sizes.

Three Ways to Ship to Estonia

There are three transport options for Estonia; volume, budget and delivery time decide which suits you.

Full Load (Exclusive Vehicle)

A full load means the vehicle carries only your goods, loading at your UK address and driving straight to your Estonian home, with customs handled on the way. The UK-to-Tallinn route crosses through the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Latvia, covering approximately 1,900 miles. Full load to Tallinn typically takes 4–6 days door to door; to Tartu and Pärnu 4–6 days; to Narva and northeastern Estonia 5–7 days. Full load is standard for three-bedroom or larger household moves and for any move requiring schedule certainty.

Part Load and Groupage (Shared Vehicle)

Part load groups your goods with other shipments heading to Estonia and the Baltics, and you pay only for the space they take. Part load delivery to Tallinn typically takes 7–14 days door to door; to Tartu and southern Estonia 7–14 days. Part load is the standard choice for studios, single-room moves, student relocations and any move where cost is the primary consideration.

Pre-Departure Storage

When UK and Estonian dates do not match, our storage service holds your packed goods securely in the UK until the Estonian property is confirmed. Because Estonia is further than Central European destinations, many customers use storage before departure.

Where We Deliver in Estonia

We deliver throughout Estonia. Typical door-to-door times from London are below.

  • Tallinn, Estonia's capital and the primary destination for British professionals, entrepreneurs and expats. Full load 4–6 days; part load 7–14 days.
  • Tartu, Estonia's university city and cultural capital in the south-east. Full load 4–6 days; part load 7–14 days.
  • Pärnu, the Baltic coast resort town, popular with families and lifestyle movers. Full load 4–6 days; part load 7–14 days.
  • Narva, the border city in northeastern Estonia with a significant Russian-speaking community. Full load 5–7 days; part load 8–14 days.
  • Viljandi, the south Estonian market town known for its folk music festival and medieval castle ruins. Full load 4–6 days; part load 7–14 days.
  • Saaremaa Island, Estonia's largest island, accessible by ferry from the mainland. Full load 5–7 days including ferry transit; part load 8–14 days.

All times include customs clearance. The Baltic crossing is one of the longer European removals routes from the UK and transit reliability is highly dependent on complete documentation. For Estonia-specific moving guides and relocation advice, visit our blog.
