Got questions?
We've got answers...

  • How much notice do I need to give to reserve my Removals UK to Luxembourg service?

Usually it’s best to book at least a week in advance. We still welcome short notice jobs, please check with our team regarding availability. You can call us, drop us a line or chat via Whatsapp.

  • I've never used a Removals UK to Luxembourg company before, can I book an assessment?

Yes you can. We would love to visit you for a free no obligation quote. You can also send us a walkthough video of your property so we can assess further.

  • I need a moving company in Luxembourg to move me outside London, what’s your coverage?

We cover the whole of the UK and also most European countries.

  • Do I need customs clearance for removals to Luxembourg since Brexit?

Yes. Since 1 January 2021, all removals from the UK to Luxembourg require formal customs clearance with the Administration des douanes et accises (ADA). There are no volume or value exemptions. RMV manages all ADA customs documentation as standard on every UK-to-Luxembourg booking.

  • What is Luxembourg's import TVA rate for household goods?

Luxembourg's standard TVA (VAT) rate is 17%, the lowest standard rate in the European Union. For a household move declared at £60,000, a failed Transfer of Residence application would result in a TVA liability of £10,200. A successful Transfer of Residence application eliminates this liability entirely. Luxembourg's 17% rate compares favourably with Italy at 22%, Germany at 19%, Denmark at 25%, France at 20% and Austria at 20%.

  • What is the Certificat de Résidence and do I need it before my move?

The Certificat de Résidence is the official proof of Luxembourg commune registration, issued by your local municipality (commune) after you register at your new Luxembourg address. It is required by the ADA as the primary proof that you are establishing primary residence in Luxembourg for Transfer of Residence customs purposes. You register at the commune administration office by presenting your lease or property deed and passport. The Certificat de Résidence is issued immediately or within a few days of registration. Securing it before or shortly after your shipment arrives is essential to completing customs clearance without delay.

  • What are the best residential areas for British expats in Luxembourg?

The most popular communes for British expats in Luxembourg are Strassen, Bertrange and Mamer, the western suburban belt with good international school access, family housing and easy commuting distance to Kirchberg and the banking district. Luxembourg City's Kirchberg and Limpertsberg districts are the primary city-centre choices for EU institution employees. Hesperange, to the south, is popular with financial sector professionals. Esch-sur-Alzette draws academics and researchers at the Belval campus.

  • How does the Greater Region cross-border dynamic affect my removal?

If you are working in Luxembourg but living in the French, German or Belgian border regions of the Greater Region, the country of your residence, not Luxembourg, determines your customs documentation requirements. A British national establishing residence in French Lorraine and commuting to Luxembourg would file Transfer of Residence documentation with the French customs authority (not the ADA), using the French Cerfa 10070*01 declaration. RMV's move managers assess Greater Region delivery addresses individually and advise on the correct customs pathway for your specific country of residence.

  • How far in advance should I book a removal to Luxembourg?

Luxembourg's short transit time from London (1–2 days full load) means the lead time for the journey itself is minimal. However, two to four weeks' booking notice is still recommended to allow time for customs document preparation, Certificat de Résidence timing and vehicle scheduling. For corporate relocations with a fixed employer start date, four to six weeks is advisable. Call 0208 0900 232 for availability.

UK to Luxembourg Removal Cost

Luxembourg is a small country, but it is home to an unusually large number of the employers that move professionals between countries.

The Kirchberg plateau in Luxembourg City is a purpose-built district for government and finance. It grew mainly in the 1960s and 1970s, when Luxembourg became a founding member of the European Community. It is home to:

  • the European Court of Justice
  • the European Investment Bank
  • the European Court of Auditors
  • the General Secretariat of the European Parliament
  • Eurostat
  • the Publications Office of the European Union

The financial sector goes beyond these institutions. Clearstream (the European securities settlement system), the European Investment Fund and the Luxembourg Stock Exchange are all in Luxembourg City. So are the European headquarters or main EU offices of BNP Paribas, Société Générale, Deutsche Bank, HSBC and over 140 other international banks.

Luxembourg is also the European or global base of several digital companies that people do not always link with it. Amazon's European operations have their headquarters here. So do Apple's European iTunes and App Store operations, PayPal's European headquarters and Rakuten's European headquarters. Skype was also first registered here.

So British professionals moving to Luxembourg work in a wider range of jobs than in any other country in this series:

  • EU institution staff and diplomats on Kirchberg
  • investment bankers and fund managers in the banking district
  • digital economy professionals in the tech sector
  • lawyers and consultants who serve all of the above

Post-Brexit Customs Clearance for Removals to Luxembourg: The Administration des Douanes et Accises, TVA and the Certificat de Résidence

Since Brexit, every removal from the UK to Luxembourg needs formal customs clearance with the Luxembourg Administration des douanes et accises (ADA). Luxembourg's import TVA (VAT) rate is 17%. That is the lowest standard rate in the European Union. It is well below Italy (22%), Germany (19%), Denmark (25%), France (20%) and Austria (20%).

The 17% TVA rate is the most important money fact for anyone planning a Transfer of Residence move to the Grand Duchy. Take a household declared at £60,000. If your Transfer of Residence claim succeeds, you import it free of TVA and customs duty. If it fails, you owe £10,200 in TVA. That is less than in any other EU country, but it is still a large sum. So your documents need to be right.

In Luxembourg, Transfer of Residence declarations are handled by the Administration des douanes et accises (ADA), the Grand Duchy's customs and excise agency. Other countries have their own named form: Denmark's Toldstyrelsen uses Form 12024, Germany's Zollamt uses Form 0350, and French customs use Cerfa 10070*01. Luxembourg does not. It uses the standard EU customs declaration.

What Luxembourg does need is the Certificat de Résidence. This is the official proof of residence from your local commune (town council) once you have registered at your new Luxembourg address. The commune issues it when you show your lease or property deed. The ADA needs it as proof that Luxembourg is becoming your main home.

British people moving their main home to Luxembourg can bring household goods in free of TVA and customs duty through Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief. The usual EU conditions apply:

  • you have lived outside the EU for the 12 months just before the move
  • you have owned and used the goods for six months
  • you import them within 12 months of becoming resident in Luxembourg
  • you do not sell, pledge or transfer them for 12 months after import

On every UK-to-Luxembourg booking, RMV provides the full ToR document pack, help with the Certificat de Résidence and a check of your documents before departure.

Luxembourg Customs Paperwork

You need the documents below for Luxembourg customs clearance and Transfer of Residence relief. On every UK-to-Luxembourg booking, RMV provides all forms, help filling them in and a check before departure.

  • Passport copy, to show your identity and nationality to the ADA
  • The standard EU Transfer of Residence declaration, filed with the ADA, confirming the goods are for your own use at the Luxembourg address
  • Certificat de Résidence, the official proof of commune registration, issued by your local commune when you show your lease or property deed
  • A list of your goods by category, quantity and second-hand value, ideally translated into French (French is Luxembourg's official administrative language)
  • A signed statement that you have owned and used all the goods at your UK home for six months or more, and will not sell or transfer them within 12 months
  • Your signed customs authorisation, so RMV can deal directly with the ADA for your shipment
  • Bank statements, council tax bills or a UK Certificate of Residence showing 12 months in the UK before departure
  • The CMR road freight document, issued by the driver at UK collection
  • Where relevant, a letter from your employer or EU institution appointment letter, as supporting evidence for staff of the EIB, ECJ, European Commission and other institutions

Where British Professionals Live in Luxembourg: Kirchberg, Strassen, Bertrange and the Expat Communes

Luxembourg City has more foreign residents than any other EU capital. About 47% of the country's population is not Luxembourgish, and over 70% of Luxembourg City's people were born abroad. Most British professionals live in the suburban communes west and south of Luxembourg City. In the city itself, Kirchberg and Limpertsberg are the main expat districts.

Kirchberg and the EU Quarter

Kirchberg is Luxembourg City's plateau district and the home of its main group of EU institutions. The European Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank, the European Court of Auditors, Eurostat's headquarters, the General Secretariat of the European Parliament and the European School Luxembourg I are all within walking distance of each other.

British staff at these institutions usually move into one- to three-bedroom flats in Kirchberg or in nearby Limpertsberg. Kirchberg's apartment buildings are modern and well run, and removal vans can usually reach them easily. RMV's removals service covers every Kirchberg address, with a full access check.

Strassen and Bertrange, The Primary British Expat Communes

Strassen and Bertrange are the two communes just west of Luxembourg City. They are the places most linked with the British expat community. Both have a mix of detached family houses and larger flats. Both have good access to international schools: the European School Luxembourg II, in Mamer and Bertrange, serves the western suburbs. And both are an easy commute to Kirchberg and the banking district by car or bus.

Strassen and Bertrange are the most common delivery addresses on RMV's UK-to-Luxembourg route. After delivery, our handyman service assembles and sets up furniture in homes there.

Mamer, Hesperange and the Southern Communes

Mamer, north-west of Luxembourg City, is home to the European School Luxembourg II. It attracts British families with school-age children who move on EU institution or banking contracts. Hesperange, to the south, is a larger commune with a mix of homes. It is popular with finance professionals who commute to the banking district.

Both are 15–20 minutes from Luxembourg City by road. Luxembourg's roads are well kept and its motorways have no tolls, which helps removal vans and sets it apart from France and Italy. Standard removal vans can reach homes easily across the suburban communes.

Esch-sur-Alzette and the Southern Industrial Belt

Esch-sur-Alzette is Luxembourg's second-largest city. It lies 15 km south of the capital, in the former industrial canton of Esch. Steel once dominated southern Luxembourg. Since that industry declined, Esch has been heavily regenerated.

It now draws professionals working at the University of Luxembourg's Belval campus, at Arcelor Mittal's Luxembourg operations, and at the research and technology institutes in the Belval science park. Most British movers to Esch are academics, researchers and science professionals. For smaller Esch moves that do not need a full removal van, our man and van service costs less.

The Greater Region: Luxembourg's Cross-Border Dynamic

The Greater Region (Grande Région) is a cross-border economic zone. It covers Luxembourg and nearby parts of France (Lorraine, Grand Est), Germany (Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate) and Belgium (Wallonia). About 220,000 people commute into Luxembourg from these areas every day. No other country in the world has so many cross-border workers compared with its own population.

Some British professionals who work in Luxembourg live just over the border and commute into Luxembourg City. Popular choices are the French towns of Thionville or Longwy, the German area around Trier, and the Belgian communes near Arlon. RMV checks delivery addresses in all these cross-border areas. Where your home is in another country, we give customs paperwork advice for that country.

Service Options for Removals to Luxembourg: Full Load, Part Load, Groupage and Corporate Relocation

Luxembourg is about 530 km from London by road. After Belgium and the Netherlands, it is one of the shortest European routes. So door-to-door times are among the fastest of any UK-to-EU removal. Next-day full load delivery to Luxembourg City is possible, and part load usually takes 2–4 days.

Full Load, Dedicated Van Service

Your goods fill the whole van from UK collection to Luxembourg delivery, with no other loads. Full load from London to Luxembourg City usually takes 1–2 days.

Full load is the usual choice for family homes with three or more bedrooms, and for any move with valuable, fragile or specialist items. It also suits company moves that need a fixed delivery date to match a job start date. Because the Luxembourg route is so quick, full load is especially good for urgent moves.

Part Load and Groupage

Your belongings share the van with other loads going to Luxembourg or the Benelux region. You pay only for the cubic metres you use. Part load to Luxembourg City takes 2–4 days.

Groupage is the most common choice for:

  • young professionals
  • EU institution staff moving the contents of a studio or one-bedroom flat
  • digital economy workers moving on their own, rather than on an employer-arranged contract

If your Luxembourg home is confirmed late, our storage service covers the gap between UK and Luxembourg dates.

Corporate Relocation to Luxembourg

Many people in Luxembourg work for EU institutions. So a large share of UK-to-Luxembourg moves are company or institution moves, where the employer pays for or arranges the move.

Company moves usually need:

  • a fixed delivery date that matches the job start date
  • a formal itemised inventory for insurance and HR
  • receipts for the employer's relocation claim
  • often, storage while the Luxembourg home is not yet free on the UK departure date

RMV provides all the documents needed when an employer pays you back for the move. Our storage service covers the waiting period, and our removals service handles the whole physical move.
