Every household goods removal from the UK to Hungary now requires formal customs clearance with NAV (Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal, the National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary). Qualifying for Transfer of Residence relief, which exempts your belongings from Hungarian import VAT at 27% (the highest standard VAT rate in the EU), requires specific documentation prepared correctly before the vehicle reaches the Hungarian border.

Hungarian Customs: The Essentials

Since Brexit, all removals from the UK to Hungary require customs clearance with NAV. To import household goods duty-free, you must qualify for Hungarian Transfer of Residence relief. Hungary's standard VAT rate of 27% is the highest in the EU, making correct Transfer of Residence documentation especially important.

In Hungary, NAV requires all household goods from outside the EU to be declared. If you are moving your primary residence there, Transfer of Residence relief saves you Hungarian import VAT (27% of declared value), but the conditions must be met and the paperwork complete before the goods reach the Hungarian border.

Hungarian relief follows the EU framework. You need 12 months of residence outside the EU before the move, six months' ownership and use of the goods in the UK, import within a year of establishing Hungarian residence, and no sale or transfer for 12 months after import.

Hungary's currency is the forint (HUF), not the euro. British nationals need a residence permit for stays beyond 90 days in any 180, and since Brexit must register their address (lakcím bejelentés) and obtain a TAJ number (social security) and adóazonosító jel (tax number). Hungarian clearance under Transfer of Residence relief needs the following. We provide every blank form and check the set before departure.

• Passport copy, identity and nationality confirmation for Hungarian customs (NAV)
• Hungarian proof of residence: rental contract, property deed or lakcím bejelentés (address registration) confirmation from the local government office
• Inventory of everything being shipped, with second-hand values per category, signed and dated
• Completed Transfer of Residence declaration for Hungarian customs (NAV), covering import duty and VAT exemption
• Self-certificate of ownership: over six months' use at your UK residence, and a promise not to sell or pass on the goods within 12 months of import
• Authorisation, signed by you, for RMV to represent you directly with NAV
• UK residence evidence for the previous 12 months, using council tax bills, bank statements or a UK Certificate of Residence
• Driver-completed CMR consignment note from collection day
